Portugal's Digital Nomad Visa (D8) | Live and Work in the EU

Portugal's digital nomad visa (the D8) lets non-EU remote workers live and work in Portugal, one of the most affordable and highest-quality-of-life bases on the Atlantic coast. Here is how it works, and how it compares with the Golden Visa.

Who It's For

The pandemic normalised remote work, and countries such as Portugal became a magnet for people who could work from anywhere with a laptop and an internet connection. EU citizens can work in any EU country freely; non-EU citizens need a visa. The D8 is Portugal's answer for remote workers and independent professionals.

Requirements for the D8

Broadly, applicants need to show:

Because Portugal has a relatively low cost of living compared with France or Germany, the income threshold still leaves room to enjoy the lifestyle.

How to Apply

Applications are made through the Portuguese consulate or embassy in your country of residence, or with AIMA (the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, which replaced the former SEF) once in Portugal. It is sensible to arrange the appointment in advance.

The Golden Visa Alternative

If your goal is a long-term route to EU citizenship without relocating full-time, the Golden Visa may suit you better than the D8. It grants the right to live, work and study in Portugal in exchange for a qualifying investment (from €250,000 via the cultural route or €500,000 via a regulated fund, real estate no longer qualifies), with a very low stay requirement of about seven days a year.

After five years of residency you can apply for permanent residency, with a route to Portuguese (and therefore EU) citizenship thereafter, seven years for EU/CPLP nationals and ten years for others under the 2026 Nationality Law. For internationally mobile investors who want optionality without moving immediately, that flexibility is the deciding factor.
